Jimmies vanquish Vikings in straight sets to finish off 50th anniversary celebration

JAMESTOWN, N.D.— The second-ranked University of Jamestown women's volleyball team capped off a successful 50th anniversary celebration with a sweep of Valley City State (N.D.) University Saturday afternoon at Harold Newman Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Down 20-18 and 21-20 late in the opening set, Jamestown won the final five points, including a pair of kills by Aleah Zieske and another by Charlotte Lempka to take a 1-0 match lead.
  • Three straight kills by Zieske were part of a 4-0 Jimmie run that broke a 10-all tie. The Vikings cut the gap to 14-11 before UJ won four in a row and six of seven for a 20-12 lead.
  • Valley City State held a slim 13-12 lead in the third but Jamestown gradually found their way back in to the match and closed out the Vikings by winning 7 of the final 11 points.
  • Zieske paced the Jimmies with 22 kills, followed by Lempka with 9 and Lexi Olson with 7.
  • Lempka hit a team-high .643 with 0 errors on 14 attacks.
  • Lily Bertsch passed out 25 assists and Tenley Buddenhagen 24 in helping UJ hit .301 for the match as a team.
  • Grace Hegerle led all players with 14 digs, followed by Ellie Holen with 13.
  • Olson and Charlee Krieg both had a pair of block assists and Olson had UJ's lone solo block.

  • Jamestown travels to Madison, S.D., to take on Dakota State University on Friday, October 25. Match time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
