Top-ranked Jimmies post pair of sweeps in San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO, Texas-- The No. 1 University of Jamestown women's volleyball team swept both of its matches Friday at the San Antonio ShinDig, hosted by Our Lady of the Lake University.

UJ improves to 3-4 overall and will play in the United Sports Academy Labor Day Classic in Sioux City next weekend.

Jamestown 3, Oklahoma City 0

The Jimmies recorded their first sweep of the season in defeating Oklahoma City 25-22, 25-13, 25-10.

Aleah Zieske had nine kills for UJ and added seven digs. Logan Sherman hit a team-best .375 and had seven kills. 

Lily Bertsch (15) and Paige Oswald (12) combined for 27 assists in helping Jamestown outhit OCU .299 to .012.

Ellie Holen had a match-high 13 digs and Lexi Olson led all players with seven total blocks (five solo). 

An ace by Zieske made it 23-18 in favor of the Jimmies in set one, then back-to-back kills by the Stars aided a 4-0 run and cut UJ's lead to 23-22. Sherman's third kill of the set put Jamestown at set point, and an OCU attack error gave the Jimmies the victory.

Oklahoma City trailed 8-3 in the second set before reeling off eight of the next 10 points to go in front by one. After trading back-to-back points, OCU again led by one (13-12), but UJ closed out the set with an incredible 13-point rally. Four attack errors and two bad sets by the Stars aided Jamestown's comeback, which also featured a pair of aces from Bertsch.

The Jimmies held a 5-3 lead in the third but quickly stretched it to double digits behind a 12-3 run. OCU got as close as 20-9. Following an attack error by the Stars, Rachel Schiele posted two aces as part of the final four points to close out the match.

Jamestown 3, Carroll (Mont.) 0

Sherman and Darienne Johnson led the Jimmies with nine kills each as UJ defeated Carroll College 25-16, 25-16, 27-25 to round out the day.

Johnson (.471) and Olson (.467) both hit over .450 for the match. Olson added eight kills and Ava Mueller finished with seven.

Bertsch set a career-high with 20 assists and six digs while Paige Oswald passed out 13 assists. UJ outhit the Saints .336 to .135 in the match.

Holen (15) and Zieske (10) both reached double figures in digs. Johnson had three blocks, all solo.

UJ opened the match with the first six points and trailed by no less than five the rest of the set. 

In set two, Carroll closed within 15-14 but a kill from Johnson started a 10-2 run that propelled the Jimmies to a 25-16 win. Six of the final eight UJ points came on kills, with the other two on aces from Holen.

The Saints looked to be on their way to forcing a fourth set after a 7-1 run made it 20-16. Jamestown rallied to tie the score at 22-22, but Carroll took two straight for a 24-22 lead. 

The Jimmies staved off two set points before trailing 25-24 and facing set point yet again. Back-to-back kills by Sherman gave UJ the match.
