No. 2 Jimmies sweep 22nd-ranked Dordt; advance to GPAC semifinals

The second-ranked University of Jamestown volleyball team advanced to the semifinals of the GPAC postseason tournament with a sweep of No. 22 Dordt (Iowa) University Saturday evening at Harold Newman Arena.

Jamestown (29-2) will host No. 9 Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) while Concordia (Neb.) plays at Midland (Neb.) on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Despite losing their seventh straight match, Dordt (13-12) gave the Jimmies all they could handle. The Defenders held leads in both of the first two sets and trimmed an eight-point third set deficit down to three before UJ pulled away.

Jamestown used a 4-0 run midway through the first set, breaking a 15-15 tie and riding the momentum to a 25-21 win. UJ scored five of the final seven points after Dordt got within 20-19, finishing with a .368 hitting percentage and 18 kills in the first frame.

The Defenders led 10-5 in the second before the Jimmies reeled off four straight to cut the lead to one. Five straight points by Dordt opened up an 18-13 advantage, and after a block by Ellie Voss and Allison Timmermans, the lead was 19-17. A kill by Anna Holen (SR/LaMoure, N.D.) ignited an eight-point UJ rally, enough to take a 25-19 win.

The Jimmies appeared to be on their way to an easy sweep, racing out to a 12-3 third set lead. Dordt hung around, scoring 11 of the next 16 points to make it a 17-14 deficit, but could not get any closer than three points the rest of the way. Jamestown ended the match with three of the last four points in a 25-20 set win.

Holen had 10 kills and 16 digs while Aleah Zieske (SO/Spicer, Minn.) and Logan Sherman (JR/Marshall, Minn.) both finished with eight. Kalli Hegerle (SR/West Fargo, N.D.) passed out 17 assists and had 14 digs, and Paige Oswald (JR/Frazee, Minn.) ended with 16 assists and seven digs.

Ellie Holen (JR/LaMoure, N.D.) had a match-high 26 digs. Sherman and Lexi Olson (SO/Langdon, N.D.) each had five total blocks.

UJ outhit Dordt .221 to .023 for the match and had 42 kills to the Defenders' 26.
