No. 6 Jimmies stay hot with sweep of Morningside

The sixth-ranked University of Jamestown volleyball team won for the 13th straight match, defeating Morningside (Iowa) University in GPAC conference action, 25-12, 25-19, 25-19 Saturday afternoon at Harold Newman Arena.

Jamestown (13-1 overall, 2-0 GPAC) started out strong, outhitting the Mustangs .429 to .103. The Jimmies used four Aleah Zieske (SO/Spicer, Minn.) kills and three more from Kalli Hegerle (SR/West Fargo, N.D.) to cruise to an 11-point win.

The final two sets were closer in score, but UJ hit .378 and .325 to complete the sweep.

Leading 16-15 midway through the second, back-to-back kills by Zieske gave the Jimmies a little more cushion. Morningside would get no closer than two points, as UJ finished the set with four of the final five points to lead the match 2-0.

The Jimmies trailed 12-11 in the final set but used an Anna Holen (SR/LaMoure, N.D.) kill and a Mustang attack error to lead 13-12. The teams traded the next five points and Morningside drew even at 15-15. A service error by the Mustangs started a 5-0 run for Jamestown, giving the Jimmies their biggest advantage of the set. Morningside closed the gap with a 4-0 run of its own to make it 20-19, but UJ slammed the door with kills by Holen, Zieske, and Lexi Olson (SO/Langdon, N.D.) along with a pair of Mustang errors.

Jamestown outhit Morningside .372 to .120 in the match and finished with six service aces. Zieske led the Jimmies with 14 kills and a .591 attack mark. Olson finished with 11 kills and Hegerle had a .500 attack mark on eight kills.

Hegerle also dished out 25 assists while Paige Oswald (JR/Frazee, Minn.) added 17.

Defensively, Ellie Holen (JR/LaMoure, N.D.) had 26 digs while Anna Holen had nine and Zieske seven. Olson and Darienne Johnson (JR/Eastpointe, Mich.) both had a solo block.

The Jimmies travel to No. 23 Dordt (Iowa) University next Saturday for a 3 p.m. match.
