Jimmies draw with #13 Missouri Valley in season opener

MARSHALL, Mo.-- Sidney Mikes scored her first goal of the season as the University of Jamestown women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw at No. 13 Missouri Valley College.

The match was the season opener for the Jimmies (0-0-1), while the Vikings move to 0-1-1.

Mikes put UJ in front in the fourth minute on an assist by Kyla Yamada. Jamestown held on to the 1-0 lead until the 15th minute, when Carla Carmona took a Miluska Guevara pass and tied the game with her first of the season.

MVC earned a penalty kick in the 42nd minute but Rina Kinami's try bounced off the crossbar, and the teams ended the first half level at 1-1.

Jamestown was held without a shot in the second half, and was down to ten players after Miarosa Gyllenswan picked up her second caution of the match in the 69th minute. The Vikings saw their chance to capitalize on the advantage shortly thereafter, with Ashley Arribas hitting the crossbar in the 71st minute, and another shot by Kinami was saved by Tea Pence less than 45 seconds later.

The Jimmie defense came up with three stops in the final eight minutes to keep the game tied. A header by Daijah White off a corner kick was blocked in the 82nd minute, and Pence made saves in the 84th and 86th minutes on shots by Madi Hudson and Arribas.

MVC had a 9-2 edge in shots. Pence finished with five saves overall.

UJ returns to action on Friday against Columbia (Mo.) at 11 AM.
