Third quarter run proves to be difference in Jimmies loss to Mayville

THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Jimmies opened with a nine-point lead within the first five minutes, the Comets quickly responded with two three pointers to get within three at 6-9 with 3:28 left in the first quarter. 
  • Sarah Lenz and Kia Tower sunk a pair of three pointers and the Jimmies led 15-6 with 2:14 remaining in the first quarter. Comets responded with two two-point buckets to make the score 10-15 with 1:35 remaining. Megan Oswald and Hannah Hagel each had two-pointers to end the first quarter with the Jimmies leading by nine, 10-19. 
  • Audrey Rodakowski and Kate Cordes opened up the second quarter with two-pointers to extend the Jimmies lead to 13 (23-10). The Comets came back and were able to lessen the Jimmies lead to seven (16-23). Rodakowski responded with a two-pointer bringing the Jimmies lead to nine (25-16).   
  • Starting at 7:10 remaining in the second quarter, the Comets scored three three-pointers, three two-pointers, and four free throws for 19 points. The Jimmies made two free throws, one three-pointer, and one two-pointer for 7 points. The score at the end of the second quarter was 35-32 with the Comets leading. 
  • The Comets scored first the third quarter bringing their lead to 37-32. Rodakowski's free throws at 8:00 remaining had the Jimmies trailing three. The Comets then went on an 17-1 scoring streak to lead 54-35 with three minutes remaining in the third quarter. In the remaining minutes, Sarah Lenz made a three-pointer, Kate Busek made a pair of free throws, and Kate Cordes made a two and three-pointer, while the Comets scored nine points. The third quarter ending score was 63-45. 
  • Tower made a three-pointer to start the final quarter. Comets made four free throws and a three-pointer, and the Jimmies made one free throw and one two-pointer, making the score 70-51 with 6:44 remaining. The Jimmies were able to get within 15 points, but ultimately fell to the Comets. The game ended 81-66.

FOR THE JIMMIES

  • Tower and Rodakowsi led the team each with eleven points.
  • Busek had nine rebounds and two assists, Tower and Cordes each had seven rebounds.
  • The Jimmies scored 23 points off the bench. 

FOR THE COMETS

  • Mackenzie Hughes led with 24 points. 
  • CJ Decker (10), Jordan Zrust (10), Alex Page (12), and Jes Mertens (17) also scored double digits. 
  • Jordan Zrust had ten rebounds.
