Jimmies defeat VCSU in season opener

The University of Jamestown women's basketball team won its seventh straight season opener, defeating Valley City State (N.D.) University 77-57 Friday evening at Harold Newman Arena.

THE BASICS

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Trailing 6-3 five minutes in, UJ finished the quarter on a 14-5 run to lead 17-11 after one.
  • Kate Busek led Jamestown with five points while Audrey Rodakowski added four.
  • Rodakowski had the last Jimmie basket in the first quarter and scored the first basket of the second, then Sarah Lenz drained a three-pointer and made another jumper inside the arc to give Jamestown a 24-11 lead.
  • The largest lead of the half for UJ came after Megan Oswald scored to make it 29-13 at the 5:38 mark, and again following a Hannah Hagel layup a minute later.
  • VCSU got as close as 11 but a Lenz three-pointer gave the Jimmies a 38-22 halftime lead. Lenz finished the quarter with 11 points and 14 in the half.
  • After shooting 47 percent in the second quarter, Jamestown improved that mark to 50 percent in the third quarter.
  • Kate Cordes had the hot hand for the Jimmies in the third, scoring 11 points on 4-of-4 shooting (3-of-3 from three-point range).
  • Jailyn Martinson gave Jamestown a 21-point lead when she scored at the 6:31 mark, then made another basket just under a minute later to extend the lead to 49-26.
  • Rodakowski opened the fourth quarter with a bucket to give the Jimmies their largest lead of the night at 63-35.
  • VCSU put together a 16-3 run over a span of 3:21 but got no closer than 15 points the rest of the way.
  • Nine of UJ's 16 fourth-quarter points came from reserves, including six by Jessica Oberlander.

FOR THE JIMMIES

  • Lenz had a game-high 16 points off the bench, including four three-pointers.
  • Cordes also made four threes on her way to 14 points.
  • Rodakowski was the other Jimmie in double figures with 11 points.
  • Tower had eight rebounds and along with Busek passed out five assists.

FOR THE VIKINGS

  • Ashlyn Diemert led VCSU with 14 points and five rebounds.
  • Hailey Roberts (12) and Ellie Braaten (11) were also in double figures.
  • Ellie Powell also grabbed five rebounds.,
