Jimmies end three-game losing streak; complete season sweep of CUNE

The Jimmie women's basketball team used a big second quarter to build a nine-point lead, then held off a pesky Concordia (Neb.) University full-court press in the second half for a 79-72 win over the Bulldogs Saturday afternoon at Harold Newman Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Bulldogs led by seven after Megan Belt's three-pointer made it 14-7 with 4:56 left in the first quarter.
  • Kia Tower and Hannah DeMars sank three-pointers of their own, and Kate Busek added a basket as UJ took a 15-14 lead at the 1:37 mark.
  • CUNE went back in front after Abby Krieser scored on the next trip down the floor, and the quarter ended 16-15.
  • Tower and DeMars each had five points to lead Jamestown in the first quarter.
  • The second quarter featured seven lead changes and one tie, with a Tower three at the 5:03 mark giving UJ a 24-22 lead.
  • Jamestown outscored the Bulldogs 19-9 to end the half with a 40-31 advantage.
  • DeMars had 10 points and six rebounds to give her a first half of 15 points and nine rebounds.
  • Audrey Rodakowski's first points of the game opened the third quarter and made it 42-31 with 9:34 left.
  • Concordia responded with an 8-0 run over the next 1:09 to trim the deficit to three, but the Jimmies used a Tower three and a Jailyn Martinson basket to go back in front by eight.
  • Krieser made a pair of free throws to bring the Bulldogs within 47-44 at the 5:56 mark.
  • An 11-4 run capped off by Sarah Lenz's second three-pointer of the game extended the lead to double digits (58-48) with 1:54 to play in the third.
  • Rodakowski gave the Jimmies their largest lead of the game (13 points) with a basket to make it 72-59 with 1:50 remaining.
  • Concordia scored eight straight points to get within 72-67, but UJ made their last seven free throws to help put the game away.

JAMESTOWN GAME NOTES

  • Jamestown shot 45 percent (27-for-60) from the floor, including 43.3 percent (13-of-30) from three.
  • DeMars posted her ninth double-double of the season, finishing with 25 points and tied a career high with 17 rebounds.
  • Tower was also in double figures with 17 points along with Kate Cordes (10).
  • Tower and Busek each dished out four assists.
  • Five players had two or more three-pointers, led by DeMars with four.

CONCORDIA GAME NOTES

  • Concordia shot 35.8 percent (24-of-67) from the floor, including 40 percent (12-of-30) from three.
  • Taysha Rushton had 15 points to lead the Bulldogs, followed by Krieser with 14 and Belt with 10.
  • Sadie Powell grabbed a team-high six rebounds and joined Kendal Brigham with four assists.
  • Belt was 4-of-6 on three-point attempts
