Jimmies start strong, defeat Mount Marty for fourth straight win

Boosted by a 19-6 lead after one quarter, the University of Jamestown women's basketball team won its fourth straight game Wednesday night, defeating Mount Marty (S.D.) University 74-53 at Harold Newman Arena.

Jamestown moves to 15-8 overall and 8-7 in the conference while the Lancers fall to 2-21 overall and 1-15 in the GPAC.

Noelle Josephson (SR/Ramsey, MN) had 18 points, seven rebounds, and three steals to lead the Jimmies, who also got 13 points from Hannah DeMars (JR/Grand Rapids, MN) and 10 off the bench from Megan Oswald (FR/Brownsdale, MN).

UJ shot 57 percent in the first quarter while holding Mount Marty to 3-of-14 shooting. The Lancers' struggles continued in the second quarter, as Eve Millar's free throw at the 9:10 mark was the only point until Aubrey Twedt sank a pair of foul shots with 4:03 left before the half.

Madelyn Schmidt (FR/Tappen, ND) gave Jamestown its largest lead of the half with a three-pointer that made it 34-11.

After halftime, Mount Marty made its first seven shots to open the third quarter, and cut the lead to 43-33 with 3:41 left. The Lancers finished the quarter shooting 75 percent but the Jimmies still maintained an 11-point advantage going into the fourth.

Mount Marty got within nine points on a three-pointer by Kiara Berndt at the 7:58 mark, but DeMars scored to start an 8-0 run that ballooned the lead to 17 with 6:26 left.

Millar led Mount Marty with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Berndt had nine points off the bench.

Lexiss Trygg (FR/Virginia, MN) had nine points and five rebounds and Schmidt finished with eight for the Jimmies.

UJ hosts Northwestern (Iowa) Saturday at 2 p.m.
