Softball postseason run ends with loss to Dordt

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa-- The University of Jamestown softball team had a five-run lead slip away as Dordt (Iowa) rallied for a 12-11 victory Thursday in an elimination game in the Midland pod of the Great Plains Athletic Conference postseason tournament.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS

  • Kayla Quintanilla, Hope Ransome, and Ally Battistoni each had an RBI as the Jimmies took a 3-0 lead after the top of the first.
  • Dordt took advantage of three UJ errors and put up six runs in the bottom of the first, chasing Jamestown starter Bristol Foytik after two-thirds of an inning.
  • Quintanilla hit a two-run home run in the top of the second, bringing the Jimmies within a run at 6-5.
  • Trinity Gregg drew a bases-loaded walk in the top of the third to bring in the tying run, then Samarah Martinez singled in two more runs to give UJ an 8-6 lead.
  • Jamestown's second homer of the game came off the bat of Mackenzie Lefebvre, a three-run shot in the top of the fourth, that extended the Jimmies' lead to 11-6.
  • The Defenders answered with three runs of their own in the bottom of the fourth, and a single run in the bottom of the fifth made the score 11-10 Jamestown.
  • In the sixth, UJ had runners on second and third with one out, and later loaded the bases with two outs but were unable to capitalize.
  • Brooklyn Cox singled to lead off the seventh for Dordt, then came around to score as Brooke Rule reached on an error, eventually ending up at second base.
  • Another Jimmie error put Karlie Olsen on first and Rule on third, then Aurora Tyson's sacrifice fly scored Rule with the winning run.
  • Jamestown outhit Dordt 15-11 in the game, with Battistoni (3-for-4, 1 R, 1 RBI), Lefebvre (3-for-4, 3 RBI, 1 R), Gregg (2-for-4, 1 R, 1 RBI), Quintanilla (2-for-4, 3 RBI, 2 R), and Sonya Rodgers (2-for-3, 2 R) all recording multiple hits.
  • Hope Ransome (14-5) took the loss after allowing two unearned runs, striking out two in one inning of relief.
