Softball rallies for elimination game victory over Doane

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa-- The University of Jamestown softball team advanced to the second day of the Great Plains Athletic Conference postseason tournament, defeating Doane (Neb.) 3-2 Wednesday evening after losing 4-2 to Dordt (Iowa) earlier in the day.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Single runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings led Dordt to a 4-2 victory in Wednesday's first game.
  • Trinity Gregg scored the first run of the game for UJ in the top of the first, coming home on the back end of a double steal.
  • The Defenders tied the game with a run in the bottom of the second and took the lead with another in the bottom of the third.
  • Kayla Quintanilla singled to center to begin the fourth inning, then Blair followed with a double to right center and Quintanilla crossed the plate to make it 2-2.
  • Ally Battistoni joined Blair and Quintanilla in the hit column for UJ, who was held to just three hits in the game.
  • Blair (10-8) allowed four earned runs on seven hits in six innings, taking the loss in the circle.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Gracie Fisher's two-out single in the bottom of the seventh brought in the winning run as Jamestown staved off elimination with a 3-2 win over Doane (Neb.) in a loser-out game.
  • Kayla Quintanilla doubled and Fisher reached on an error as UJ took a 2-0 lead after one inning.
  • Doane broke through in the top of the fifth on Grace Dowding's RBI single, then reached on an error in the top of the seventh to allow the tying run to score.
  • Samarah Martinez started the Jimmie seventh with a single to center field and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Quintanilla. Abby Blair popped out to shortstop for the second out, then Fisher followed with the game-winning hit.
  • Hope Ransome (14-4) went the distance for UJ, giving up two runs (one earned) on seven hits.
  • Martinez (3-for-4, 2 R) posted her fifth three-hit game of the season.

  • Jamestown faces Dordt at 10 a.m. Thursday morning in an elimination game. The winner moves on to face Midland (Neb.) at 12:15 p.m. with the if necessary game scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
