Softball returns to win column with sweep of Flames

The University of Jamestown softball team got back winning ways on Saturday, defeating College of Saint Mary (Neb.) 8-0 and 3-1 at the Nelson Family Bubble.

THE BASICS

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Trinity Gregg got things started for the Jimmies in the bottom of the first, leading off with a triple to left center. One out later, Gregg scored on a wild pitch to make it 1-0.
  • After a Maddie Spaeth double and Gentrey Turin bunt single put runners on the corners with one out, Gregg doubled to left, extending the UJ lead to 3-0.
  • Samarah Martinez singled in Gregg for the fourth Jamestown run. Still with one out, the Jimmies loaded the bases with a walk to Kayla Quintanilla and a single by Hope Ransome.
  • Mackenzie Lefebvre's sacrifice fly scored Martinez to make it 5-0.
  • Spaeth came home on Gregg's single in the bottom of the sixth, and Martinez smashed a two-run home run to end the game via run-rule.
  • Sunny Halsey (3-0) pitched a three-hit shutout and struck out eight while allowing only one walk.
  • Gregg was 4-for-4 with three runs scored and three driven in. Martinez had two hits, scored twice and also knocked in three. Spaeth doubled twice and scored twice.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS

  • CSM used a passed ball and a pair of two-out singles in the top of the first to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Ally Battistoni's single with one out in the bottom of the second was the only Jamestown hit through the first five innings, and the Flames held on to a 1-0 lead entering the bottom of the sixth.
  • Maddie Spaeth led off the inning with a pinch-hit single followed by a walk to Gentrey Turin. Trinity Gregg singled up the middle as Spaeth scored to tie the game. Still with no outs, Samarah Martinez put down a squeeze bunt, the throw to get Turin coming home from third was late, and the Jimmies took a 2-1 lead. On the play, Gregg ended up at third at Martinez at second, helping Jamestown add another run on Kayla Quintanilla's groundout to second base.
  • Hope Ransome (7-3) struck out nine against one walk, giving up a run on six hits to get the win.
