Softball sees conference win streak snapped

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa-- The University of Jamestown softball team had its four-game conference win streak ended Wednesday evening, with a 7-6 and 7-4 loss to Dordt University at the ASB Sports Complex.

THE BASICS

  • SCORES: Dordt 7, Jamestown 6; Dordt 7, Jamestown 4
  • LOCATION: ASB Sports Complex / Sioux Center, Iowa
  • RECORDS: Jamestown 18-7 (4-2 GPAC); Dordt 15-14 (2-0 GPAC)

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS

  • A two-run double by Maddie Spaeth and a three-run home run by Samarah Martinez helped stake the Jimmies to a 5-0 lead in the second inning.
  • Dordt struck for six runs on seven hits in the bottom of the third to take a 6-5 lead, then added another run in the fourth for a 7-5 lead.
  • Kayla Quintanilla led off the top of the fifth with a solo home run to bring the Jimmies within a run at 7-6.
  • Martinez, Quintanilla, and Maddie Spaeth all had two hits for Jamestown. Spaeth hit a pair of doubles and Martinez added one more.

GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS

  • Dordt took a 3-0 lead after the first inning, and it wasn't until the third inning that the Jimmies got on the scoreboard.
  • With two outs and Gentrey Turin on second and Trinity Gregg on first, Kayla Quintanilla doubled to left, allowing Turin and Gregg to come home, cutting Dordt's lead to 3-2.
  • The Defenders added a single run in the third and the score remained 4-2 until the top of the sixth.
  • After the first two Jimmie hitters were retired, Abby Blair singled to left and then a wild pitch advanced her to second base. Amanda Burch walked, then Gentrey Turin doubled down the left field line to score both runners and tie the game.
  • A bases-clearing double by Dordt in the bottom of the sixth put the Defenders back in front and they held on for the 7-4 win.
  • Quintanilla was 2-for-4 batting and six other Jimmies recorded a hit.
