Jimmies conclude weekend with win over Dickinson State
ABERDEEN, S.D.-- The Jimmie softball team defeated Dickinson State (N.D.) 5-2 to split a pair of games Saturday afternoon at the Presentation College Dome.
The Jimmies (3-5) used RBI doubles by Megan Neiles in the second and Gentrey Turin and Maddie Spaeth in the third to take a 3-0 lead.
Dickinson State rallied for two runs against Jamestown starter Sunny Halsey in the top of the sixth to make it a one-run game, but the Jimmies responded in the bottom half.
Skylar Thorpe drew a one-out walk, then stole second with two outs. Trinity Gregg doubled to center and Thorpe came home with the fourth UJ run. Gentrey Turin followed with a single to left, scoring Gregg to make it 5-2.
Halsey allowed a leadoff single in the seventh but retired the next three batters to complete the win. Halsey (1-2) went the distance, striking out three for her first win of the season.
Gregg and Turin both had a pair of hits for Jamestown. Samarah Martinez and Angie Chin also had stolen bases.
In Saturday's opening game against Minnesota State University-Moorhead, the Jimmies were tied at 1-1 going into the bottom of the second, then the Dragons scored five times for a 6-1 lead.
Gracie Fisher hit a three-run home run in the top of the third to make it 6-4, but in the bottom half, MSU-M tacked on four more run to open up a 10-4 advantage.
Trailing 11-4 in the top of the seventh with two outs, Gentrey Turin and Maddie Spaeth delivered RBI singles, and pinch-hitter Abby Blair tripled home Spaeth and Turin to get the Jimmies within 11-8. However, the Dragons would end the rally and hold on for the win.
Fisher finished 2-for-4 with 4 RBI, and Sonya Rodgers doubled and scored twice for UJ.
Jamestown's next action will be in Tucson, Ariz., March 4-10 for the Tucson Invitational Games.
