Jimmies score two Saturday sweeps

SALINA & MCPHERSON, Kan.-- The No. 11 Jimmie men's volleyball team picked up two more conference wins on Saturday, defeating Kansas Wesleyan 3-0 and Central Christian College (Kan.) 3-0.

THE BASICS

  • Final score: UJ 3 - Kansas Wesleyan 0 (25-21, 25-14, 25-11); UJ 3 - Central Christian College 0 (25-10, 25-15, 25-14)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Jimmies trailed 4-2 early on but used kills from Oguzhan Oguz, Vinny Miska, and Downey Huynh to help take a 9-6 lead.
  • UJ built a 19-15 lead, then KWU won five of the next seven points to close within 21-20.
  • Jamestown finished the set on a 4-1 run to win 25-21.
  • Oguz started off set two with a kill and the Jimmies forced a KWU timeout after building an 8-1 lead.
  • KWU got no closer than six and trailed by as many as 12 (23-11) after Ever Cancel's kill.
  • Huynh's ace was the final point in the second set.
  • Set three was never in doubt as UJ's smallest lead was five points, and a 10-2 run made it 22-9 following back-to-back aces from Maxwell Enriquez.
  • A kill by Huynh ended the set and secured the victory for Jamestown.
  • Against Central Christian College, the Jimmies opened with a 6-0 lead, then after going in front 11-4, used a 7-0 run to break the set open.
  • Oguz had two of UJ's final three kills to clinch a 25-10 win.
  • The Tigers won six of the first 10 points in the second set, only to have the Jimmies rally for 15 of the next 18 points and a 19-9 lead.
  • Jamestown hit .227 in the second set but took advantage of CCCK's (-.015) hitting percentage for the 25-15 win.
  • A Tiger service error gave UJ its first point of the third set and the serving of Sebastian Ignaczak led to three more points and a 4-0 lead.
  • UJ's smallest lead came at 7-3 but quickly ballooned to 17-7 after a pair of kills by Adam Lopata and another by Joshua Boze.
  • A ball handling error and service error accounted for the final two points in a 25-14 match-clinching win.

JAMESTOWN STAT LEADERS vs. KANSAS WESLEYAN

  • Oguz had a season-high 21 kills and hit .621 for the match, and added 3 total blocks on defense.
  • Caylor Cox hit .533 with 8 kills and no errors on 15 attempts. He also had 3 aces.
  • Huynh added 7 kills with a .417 hitting percentage, while recording a team-high 8 digs and 3 total blocks.
  • Derek Correa had 34 assists, going over 1700 for his career.

JAMESTOWN STAT LEADERS vs. CENTRAL CHRISTIAN COLLEGE

  • Lopata had a career-best 8 kills and hit .600, while notching a pair of aces as well as 4 digs and 2 blocks on defense.
  • Oguz hit .750 with 6 kills on eight attempts and had 3 aces.
  • Christian Gulak tied his season-high with 5 kills.
  • Correa passed out 21 assists and Gabriel Ocasio recorded 8.
  • Ever Cancel had three total blocks.
