Jimmies open season at SD Mines

RAPID CITY, S.D.-- The University of Jamestown men's soccer team opened the 2023 season with a 3-2 loss Saturday afternoon against South Dakota School of Mines.

UJ trailed 2-0 after Chase Stohlmann's goal in the 37th minute, but 11 seconds later, Mathias Varlet got the Jimmies on the board with an unassisted goal to make it 2-1.

The Hardrockers took a one-goal lead into halftime, and the score remained 2-1 until Boston Petersen tied the match in the 59th minute on assist by Jacob Holtz.

In the 75th minute, Hayden Jaramillo put SD Mines ahead with his second goal of the match, and it proved to be the game-winner.

Shots were 11-6 in favor of SD Mines, as were shots on target (3-2). Charlie Clark played all 90 minutes between the sticks for UJ while four goalkeepers saw action for the Hardrockers.

Jamestown (0-1-0) hosts Oak Hills Christian College in the home opener on Friday at 3:00 p.m.
