Second-half run leads Jimmie men to win over VCSU

A 16-0 second-half run was the key for the University of Jamestown men's basketball team in an 81-71 non-conference victory over Valley City State (N.D.) University Friday evening at Harold Newman Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Jimmies opened up a 22-15 lead after Jimmy Llinas made a pair of free throws at the 10:18 mark of the first half.
  • VCSU responded with a 13-0 run after Ladarious Stanfield drained a three-pointer with 7:02 to play, making it 28-22.
  • Antonio Chandler made the second of two free throws to end UJ's scoring drought of just over three-and-a-half minutes. Colby Vazquez later knocked down a three and Silas Bennion hit a jumper to draw Jamestown level at 28.
  • The teams traded baskets until the Jimmies retook the lead on a shot by Bennion with 1:04 in the half, then extended their lead to seven at the break after Chandler scored and a Bennion three-point runner at the buzzer.
  • Llinas gave UJ its first double-digit lead of the game with 16:05 remaining at 47-37.
  • VCSU whittled away at the Jamestown lead and got within three (49-46) after Cleveland Bedgood made a pair of foul shots.
  • The Vikings later got within 57-55 after Bedgood hit a jumper with 9:50 left.
  • UJ held VCSU scoreless for the next 3:34 while getting threes from Vazquez, Cole Woodford, Christian Lietz, and Spencer Barr, and a pair of baskets from Llinas to open up a 73-55 advantage.
  • The Vikings would get no closer than 10 points the rest of the way as the Jimmies took their third victory in a row.

FOR THE JIMMIES

  • Silas Bennion led all scorers with 25 points and dished out six assists.
  • Llinas posted a double-double of 22 points and 11 rebounds while also blocking three shots.
  • Vazquez was also in double figures with 10 points. Chandler and Woodford both chipped in with nine. 

FOR THE VIKINGS

  • Bedgood paced four scorers in double figures, scoring 20 points.
  • Hunter Lyman had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
