Jimmies fall to Rocky Mountain in season opener

GREAT FALLS, Mont.-- The University of Jamestown men's basketball team lost 90-79 to Rocky Mountain (Mont.) College in the season opener at the University of Providence Classic.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Jimmies trailed 23-14 after Gregory Wilson Jr. converted a three-point play with 12:25 remaining in the first half, but back-to-back jumpers by Will Cordes started a 12-3 run that brought UJ level at 26-26 at the 7:10 mark.
- Covy Kelly gave Jamestown its first lead of the game with a three-pointer to make it 29-28, then a dunk by Jimmy Llinas on the next trip down the floor extended UJ's lead to three.
- Cordes closed out the half with the final two Jimmie baskets, putting UJ ahead 40-36 at the break. He had ten first-half points while Kelly came off the bench for eight.
- A pair of free throws by Kelly and a three-pointer by Cordes extended Jamestown's lead to 56-47 a little over five minutes into the second half.
- UJ kept the lead between six and ten points until the midpoint of the half, then went up by 13 after a Kelly three at the 9:42 mark.
- RMC went on a 13-2 run over the next 2:57 to get within two points, but Cole Woodford scored to make it 75-71 with 6:22 remaining.
- Woodford's basket would be the last points for Jamestown while RMC scored the next ten points. Kelly sank a jump shot with 2:29 to play to end the Jimmie scoring drought, but Rocky scored on their next possession to take an 83-77 lead.
- Cordes made a pair of free throws to get UJ with 83-79 at the 2:04 mark, but the Battlin' Bears ended the game on a 7-0 run to preserve the win.
FOR THE JIMMIES
- Cordes and Kelly led Jamestown with 18 points each.
- Llinas recorded a double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds.
- Woodford was also in double figures with 11 points.
- Reid Gastner grabbed 10 rebounds while Llinas and Woodford both had three assists.
FOR THE BATTLIN' BEARS
- Kael Robinson had a game-high 29 points, one of four RMC players in double figures. He also pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.
- Jesse Owens passed out four assists.
