No. 11 Jimmies top of GPAC standings after win over #18 Morningside

After seeing a 15-point first half lead turn into a five-point second half deficit, the Jimmie men's basketball team used a 15-2 run to help defeat Morningside (Iowa) University Monday evening at Harold Newman Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • A 14-0 run started by a Marc Kjos three-pointer turned a 4-3 Mustang lead into a 17-4 Jimmie lead at 11:56 of the half.
  • Morningside missed 11 of their first 12 shots from the floor and went nearly five minutes without a field goal until Ely Doble ended UJ's 14-0 run with a bucket at the 11:27 mark.
  • Will Cordes gave Jamestown their biggest lead of the first (24-9) just under the halfway mark with his second three-pointer of the half.
  • The Mustangs found their stride offensively as Jack Dotzler's three-pointer ignited a run of 15 straight points, and retook the lead at 38-36 on a basket by Joey Skoff with 1:02 left.
  • Kjos drained another three to put UJ back in front by a point going into halftime.
  • Cole Woodford and Mason Walters each made three-pointers as the Jimmies went up 45-40 a little under two minutes into the second.
  • Aidan Vanderloo finished off a 16-6 Morningside run that made it 56-51 in favor of the visitors at the 11:22 mark.
  • A three-point play by Colby Vazquez put Jamestown back in front (60-58) with 9:25 to play, and 10 of the next 12 points were scored by UJ.
  • Jamestown's largest lead of the game (81-65) came on a Walters basket at 1:56.

JAMESTOWN GAME NOTES

  • The Jimmies shot 46.2 percent (30-of-65) from the floor, including 46.9 percent (15-of-32) from three-point range.
  • Walters had a double-double of 25 points and 14 rebounds while passing out a game-high seven assists.
  • Cordes was 6-of-10 on threes and finished with 19 points.
  • Kjos was also in double figures with 16 points.
  • UJ reached the 20-win mark for the the third straight season under head coach Danny Neville. The last time the Jimmies had three straight 20-plus win seasons was 2009-10 through 2011-12.

MORNINGSIDE GAME NOTES

  • Doble led all players with 27 points and had seven rebounds.
  • Skoff added 14 points and Aidan Vanderloo had 10 off the bench.
  • Trey Powers pulled down a team-best nine rebounds.
  • The Mustangs lost for the fourth time in five games at Harold Newman Arena.
