No. 14 Jimmies hold off upset bid by Concordia (Neb.)

Backed by a 17-point halftime lead, the No. 14 Jimmie men's basketball team overcame 36 percent shooting in the second half to defeat Concordia (Neb.) University 69-64 Saturday afternoon at Harold Newman Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • A 13-0 run capped off by a Will Cordes three-pointer helped Jamestown take a 16-5 lead with 11:53 in the first half.
  • The lead grew to as many as 19 points three different times before the half ended 41-24.
  • UJ shot 54 percent (15-of-28) in the first half while holding the Bulldogs to 33 percent (9-of-27).
  • Mason Walters scored 11 and Cole Woodford 10 in the first, just three points less than Concordia.
  • The lead stayed between 11 and 19 points until the Bulldogs began chipping away with 8:20 remaining.
  • CUNE outscored UJ 20-7 over a stretch of 7:24 to get within 66-62 after Garrett Seagran's basket at the 1:20 mark.
  • Woodford's three-pointer with 6:14 to play was Jamestown's last field goal until Reid Gastner scored with 0:25 left. In between, the Jimmies' five points came from the free throw line.
  • The Jamestown defense held the Bulldogs to just three second-half offensive rebounds.

JAMESTOWN GAME NOTES

  • Jamestown shot 45 percent (24-for-53) from the floor, including 30.8 percent (8-of-26) from three.
  • Woodford and Walters both had 18 points to lead UJ.
  • Walters finished with a game-high 11 rebounds and five blocked shots.
  • Marc Kjos passed out four assists and Cooper Olson added three steals.

CONCORDIA GAME NOTES

  • Concordia shot 43.9 percent (25-of-57) from the floor, including 35.3 percent (6-of-17) from three.
  • Gage Smith had 19 points and eight rebounds.
  • Seagran finished with 18 points and Bradley Bennett was also in double figures with 10.
  • Bennett added seven tebounds and four assists.
