Jimmies tame Tigers for 20th win

MITCHELL, S.D.-- Mason Walters (JR/Jamestown, ND) posted his 16th double-double of the season to help lead the University of Jamestown men's basketball team to a 74-57 win over Dakota Wesleyan University Wednesday night at the Corn Palace.

Walters finished with 26 points and 13 rebounds, one of four Jimmies in double figures. Cole Woodford (SO/Redwood Falls, MN) had 14 points, followed by Will Cordes (SO/Shakopee, MN) with 12 and 11 off the bench from Devon Schultz (SR/Arlington, MN).

Schultz and Walters shot a combined 10-for-12 from the field in the first half, combining for 23 points as the Jimmies led 37-24 at the half. Jamestown shot 15-of-29 as a team and outrebounded the Tigers 23-6 in the opening 20 minutes.

UJ took a 15-point lead on a Walters basket to open the second half, but the Tigers stormed back with a 19-5 run to get within 44-43. Marc Kjos (JR/Lake City, MN) scored to stop the DWU rally, then a pair of free throws and a three-pointer by Cordes helped Jamestown to an eight-point advantage.

The Tigers would get as close as 53-47 with 10:38 to play, but five straight by Woodford and a Kjos basket quickly made it a 13-point game. A tough performance by the Jimmie defense down the stretch limited DWU to just one field goal and four total points in the last 7:05.

Walters scored 11 in the second half while Kjos and Cordes each added nine. Koln Oppold led DWU with 18 points.

Jamestown, now 20-6 overall and 10-6 in the GPAC, host Midland (Neb.) Saturday at 3:45 p.m.
