Jimmies defeat Dordt, advance to GPAC semifinals

The University of Jamestown men's basketball team came up big from long distance Wednesday night, making 13 three-pointers in an 89-68 win over Dordt (Iowa) University in the GPAC quarterfinals.

The Jimmies (19-7) will travel to Orange City, Iowa, to face Northwestern College in the GPAC semifinals Saturday at 3 p.m.

Marc Kjos (SO/Lake City, MN) and Cole Woodford (FR/Redwood Falls, MN) combined to make seven of their eight three-point attempts as UJ finished the game at 54 percent from beyond the arc.

Jamestown made 50 percent of its first-half shots, leading by as many as 10 before the Defenders tied the game at 38 with 31 seconds left before halftime. A Woodford three put the Jimmies ahead going into the break.

Mason Walters (SO/Jamestown, ND) scored to open the second half, giving UJ a five-point lead, but the Defenders hung around. A 10-4 run gave Dordt their first lead since 2-0, and they would lead as late as 52-50 with 15:01 remaining.

A 14-2 run capped off by a Kjos three swung the momentum in favor of the Jimmies and effectively ended any hopes of a Dordt comeback. Jamestown made seven of its 11 second-half three-point attempts, while the Defenders went one-of-nine from the outside and just 10 for 29 overall.

Walters led the Jimmies with a double-double of 23 points and 11 rebounds. Kjos finished with 16 points and nine assists. UJ got nine points each from Woodford and Jack Talley (SR/Sioux Falls, SD), while Will Cordes (FR/Shakopee, MN) and Brock Schrom (SR/Grand Rapids, MN) both had eight.

Jacob Vis led Dordt (18-8) with 21 points and 10 rebounds.

The winner of Saturday's UJ-Northwestern matchup will host the winner of Saturday's Mount Marty-Dakota Wesleyan contest in the GPAC championship game.
