The University of Jamestown football team earned its first win of the season Saturday afternoon, defeating Doane (Neb.) University 10-7 at Charlotte & Gordon Hansen Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Both teams punted on their first three possessions, but the Jimmies found the end zone late in the first quarter.
  • On third and 10 from the UJ 22, Ty Monson completed a 62-yard pass to Isaiah Roebuck to take the Jimmies down to the Doane 16 yard line.
  • After Zach Hammett was held for no gain on first down, Monson found Gage Solano for a 16-yard touchdown, and the extra point by Aanon Peterson gave UJ a 7-0 lead with 1:25 remaining in the first.
  • Neither team could get much going offensively in the second quarter as the rain started to come down harder.
  • Doane's longest drive covered 25 yards while the Jimmies' longest went for 16. The Tigers turned the ball over twice (interception, fumble) while UJ also threw an interception before halftime.
  • Doane's first three drives of the second half netted negative 12 yards, but the Tigers managed to tie the game early in the fourth quarter.
  • On 4th-and-1 from the UJ 30, Reece Zutavern took the handoff and went the distance. Kelen Meyer's point after was good and the score was 7-7 with 13:35 remaining.
  • Jamestown capitalized on a bad snap to Meyer on a punt attempt from the Tiger 17-yard line. Meyer was tackled for a seven-yard loss and the Jimmies took over with prime field position and 5:24 left to play.
  • Although the drive did not end with a trip to the end zone, UJ still put points on the board after Peterson made a 24-yard field goal to make the score 10-7 at the 3:37 mark.
  • Jamestown's defense forced the Tigers to punt the ball back with 1:43 remaining, and Meyer's pinned the Jimmies at their own five yard line.
  • Carlos Julian reeled off a 37-yard run to get UJ out of the shadow of their own end zone, then followed up with a four-yard rush to force Doane to take their second timeout of the half.
  • Another two-yard gain by Julian cost the Tigers their final timeout, and a kneeldown by Monson ended the game.
