Jimmies down Doane for homecoming win
The University of Jamestown football team found the end zone on four of its seven first-half possessions and defeated Doane (Neb.) University 41-17 Saturday afternoon at Charlotte & Gordon Hansen Stadium in the annual Homecoming game.
Javon Bowie-Monteiro (SR/Sacramento, Calif.) tied a Jimmie single-game record with three touchdown receptions while Cade Torgerson (SR/Billings, Mont.) threw for 284 yards, becoming the second UJ quarterback to pass for more than 6000 career yards. Torgerson finished the day with 6166 for his career, trailing only Beau Eriksson's 6658.
Bowie-Monteiro caught scoring passes of 13 and 62 yards as Jamestown led 14-0 with 7:21 left in the first quarter. Dawson Schmidt (FR/Watertown, S.D.) was on the receiving end of Torgerson's third touchdown pass of the quarter, a 24-yard grab to make it 21-0 at the 3:07 mark.
Aanon Peterson (FR/Andover, Minn.) hit a 29-yard field goal and Bowie-Monteiro hauled in a 25-yard pass for a 31-0 Jimmie lead at halftime.
Peterson added a 21-yard field goal in the third quarter and Parker Hager (JR/Steele, N.D.) returned an interception 34 yards for a score and Jamestown went up 41-0 just under three and a half minutes into the fourth.
Doane got on the board with a pair of touchdowns and a field goal over final 7:03 to avoid being shut out.
While the UJ offense churned out 498 total yards, including 214 on the ground, the defense had an outstanding day as well. Doane managed just 68 yards of total offense in the first half, punting on their first three possessions. The Tigers had a drive end on an interception and another on downs before another resulted in a punt.
Jed Rantz (SO/Arroyo Grande, Calif.) intercepted a pair of passes and Isaac Thompson (SR/Mesa, Ariz.) picked off one more, and the Jimmies had ten tackles for loss including a pair of sacks.
Bowie-Monteiro had 142 yards receiving on five catches and Ryan Collins (JR/Akron, Ohio) caught four passes for 49 yards. Zach Hammett (FR/Mohave Valley, Ariz.) carried 14 times for 81 yards and Carlos Julian (JR/North Las Vegas, Nev.) added 57 yards on only six carries, including a long of 42.
Jamestown evens their record at 3-3 overall and is now 2-3 in the GPAC. Next up is a trip to Concordia (Neb.) next Saturday for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
