Jimmies defeat UMary to capture second straight MCH playoff championship

MANDAN, N.D.—The fifth-ranked University of Jamestown men's hockey team won its second straight Midwest College Hockey postseason tournament Sunday afternoon, defeating No. 10 University of Mary 2-1 at Starion Sports Complex in Mandan, N.D.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • An interference penalty on the Marauders' Braeden Zaste at 4:48 of the first period led to UJ's first power play chance of the game. With seven seconds left on the man advantage, Kole Christensson put the Jimmies ahead with his fifth of the season. Alek Erichuk and Matthew Poole assisted on the goal.
  • Jamestown held on to a 1-0 lead until the 4:24 mark of the second period, when Andrew Huber scored on a pass from Cyril Nagurski to make it a 1-1 game.
  • At 15:24 of the second period, the Jimmies retook the lead on a goal by Morgan Venne. It was Venne's seventh of the season and set up by Wyatt Johnson and Greg Susinski.
  • UMary went on the power play at 13:38 of the third period after Reid Wilson was called for hooking. UJ successfully killed off the penalty to maintain a one-goal lead.
  • Jamestown faced a six-on-five situation when the Marauders pulled goaltender Kyle Hayden for an extra attacker with 1:40 remaining. Sixty-five seconds later, Zaste took a slashing penalty to put the Jimmies on the power play for the final 0:35.
  • UJ outshot UMary 45-27 in the game, with Brandon Weare making 26 saves. Weare was named as the most outstanding player of the MCH playoffs.
