The University of Jamestown baseball team ran its record to 5-0 with an 11-7 win over Valley City State (N.D.) University Wednesday evening at Jack Brown Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After VCSU took a 1-0 lead, the Jimmies responded with five runs in the bottom of the first. Triston Madison had a two-run single, Jordan Singleton laced an RBI double and later scored on a wild pitch, and Jackson Bonneville hit a solo home run as part of UJ's five-hit inning.
  • Madison notched Jamestown's second home run of the game, a two-run shot that made it 7-1 going into the top of the third.
  • Jett Nelson singled to lead off the bottom of the third and Bonneville followed with his second home run of the night, pushing UJ's advantage to 9-1.
  • The Vikings plated four in the fourth to cut the lead to 9-5, but the Jimmies got one of the runs back on a two-out RBI single by Hayden Brown.
  • VCSU added single runs in the fifth and eighth to trim UJ's lead to 10-7.
  • Brown once again delivered a clutch two-out run-scoring single in the bottom of the eighth, then took the mound in the top of the ninth. He finished off the Vikings in order, getting all three batters to strike out swinging to end the game.

FOR THE JIMMIES

  • Jamestown finished with 15 hits, including three by Madison and two each from Burke, Brown, Bonneville, Alex Alva, and Ryan Muizelaar.
  • Burke scored four runs and stole three bases while reaching in four of his five plate appearances.
  • Luke Zimmer made his second start of the fall and struck out six before running into trouble in the fourth. He left after giving up five runs (one earned) on five hits in 3 2/3 innings but did not factor in the decision.
  • Cade Torgerson (2-0) earned the win in relief, pitching three innings and striking out four. He surrendered one run on two hits.
