Jimmies sweep Dickinson State to open fall schedule

The University of Jamestown baseball team used a pair of strong starting pitching performances backed by the long ball Thursday afternoon in a doubleheader sweep of Dickinson State (N.D.) University at Jack Brown Stadium.

UJ defeated the Blue Hawks by a score of 5-0 in both games to open the season with a record of 2-0. The Jimmies host Mayville State (N.D.) University Monday afternoon in a doubleheader beginning at 3:30 PM.

Game 1: 

Luke Zimmer (1-0) allowed a one-out double in the top of the first, then retired the next 20 DSU hitters to record his first career shutout. Zimmer threw 55 of his 77 pitches for strikes and faced just one batter over the minimum.

Jordan Singleton scored Jamestown's first run in the bottom of the second. Singleton led off the inning with a walk and one out later, stole second. Jett Nelson followed with a single to bring home Singleton for the 1-0 lead.

With Nelson on second and Jackson Bonneville on first in the bottom of the fifth, Alex Alva blasted a three-run home run to push UJ's lead to 4-0. 

Jamestown added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on Hayden Brown's RBI single.

Singleton and Nelson each had a pair of hits to lead the Jimmies. 

Game 2:

Cade Torgerson picked up where Zimmer left off on the mound, pitching 6 1/3 shutout innings as the Jimmies completed the sweep with a 5-0 win.

Torgerson (1-0) scattered six hits and struck out five before giving way to Hayden Brown with one out in the top of the seventh.

Alex Alva hit a solo home run and Jett Nelson was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to give UJ a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third. 

One inning later, Triston Madison connected for Jamestown's second three-run homer of the day as the lead grew to 5-0.

Chase Burke went 2-for-3 with a double, stolen base, and two runs scored. Alva also scored twice and Jordan Singleton reached on a pair of walks.
