Jimmies close out regular season with sweep of DWU

The Jimmie baseball team wrapped up the regular season on Saturday afternoon with a sweep of Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) University at Jack Brown Stadium.

Jamestown won the opener 5-4 and took game two by a score of 15-2. UJ's record improves to 27-17 overall and 16-10 in conference play, while the TIgers finish 11-32 overall and 6-22 in the GPAC.

Game 1: UJ 5, DWU 4

Troy Berg's one-out single in the bottom of the seventh scored Ben Patton with the winning run in a 5-4 Jimmie victory.

Jamestown led 4-3 in the top of the seventh, but Caleb Meyers led off the inning with a home run to tie the game. In the bottom half, Julian Sansores drew a walk and was replaced by Patton. Chase Burke put down a sacrifice bunt to move Patton into scoring position, then Berg singled to left to drive in Burke from second.

Triston Madison's solo home run in the bottom of the first put the Jimmies on the board, cutting the Tiger lead to 2-1. Burke homered to start the third inning and brought UJ level at 2-2.

The Jimmies added to their one-run lead in the bottom of the fifth on a solo home run by Berg. Berg finished 2-for-3 at the plate.

Payson Mills started for Jamestown and struck out four in five innings, allowing two runs on four hits but did not factor in the decision. Kendall Yackley (3-1) was credited with the win.

Game 2: UJ 15, DWU 2

Hayden Brown and Kendall Yackley each hit two-run home runs in the bottom of the second as part of a five-run inning, and the Jimmies cruised to a 15-2 victory.

UJ doubled their lead with another five runs in the third, then tacked on three more in the fourth. Alex Alva hit a two-run homer and Yackley singled home Troy Berg to make it 13-2.

Alva and Alex Tolbert each drove in a run for Jamestown in the fifth to round out the scoring.

The Jimmies finished the game with 11 hits, including three by Yackley and two each by Brown and Alva.

Trei Hough (3-3) pitched four innings and allowed two runs on three hits while striking out seven. Cade Torgerson struck out four in two innings of relief and Eric Kessler finished with a scoreless seventh inning to close out the game.
