Jimmies sweep Hastings in Saturday doubleheader

HASTINGS, Neb.-- The Jimmie baseball team swept a conference doubleheader over Hastings College on Saturday afternoon, winning 12-4 in game one, then came from behind to win 13-11 in game two.

Jamestown (13-11, 2-4 GPAC) is back in action Sunday with another doubleheader against the Broncos beginning at 12 p.m.

With the score tied 4-4 after two innings, UJ plated eight runs over the next three innings to break the game open. Chase Burke singled in Jordan Singleton with the go-ahead run in the top of the third, then came home on a single by Julian Sansores. Payton Smith followed with a triple to make it 7-4, then one out later, Smith scored on a Kendall Yackley single. Yackley, hitting leadoff for the first time this season, went 4-for-4 with a pair of stolen bases and two RBI.

Sansores doubled in two more runs as the Jimmies pushed their lead to 10-4 in the fourth. He finished 2-for-3 and drove in three runs while scoring twice. Burke and Reece McKenzie also had two hits for UJ.

Luke Zimmer (5-0) pitched a complete game to earn the win. He struck out six and allowed four runs on five hits over seven innings.

The Jimmies faced a 3-0 deficit going into the fourth inning in game two, but scored six times to take a 6-3 lead. Payton Smith and Triston Madison each had two RBI as UJ sent 10 batters to the plate.

Hastings went back in front with six runs in the fifth to make it 11-7. After being held off the scoreboard in the sixth, Jamestown began its comeback in the seventh. A bases-loaded walk to Kendall Yackley and a sacrifice fly by Xander Orejudos brought UJ within two runs and the comeback was complete after a four-run eighth. Chase Burke scored on a groundout to tie the game at 11-11, then a wild pitch allowed Julian Sansores to cross with the go-ahead run. Orejudos finished the Jimmie scoring, drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to make it 13-11.

Hayden Brown (1-2) struck out four over the final 2 1/3 innings to get the win. Sansores finished 3-for-4 and scored three runs. Burke went 2-for-5 also scoring three times, and Smith scored three and drove in three.
