Sansores provides walk-off winner for UJ against Missouri Baptist

FAYETTE, Mo.-- Julian Sansores delivered a one-out single in the bottom of the 11th as the Jimmie baseball team won 6-5 to split a doubleheader with Missouri Baptist University Saturday evening.

With Jordan Singleton on second and Xander Orejudos on third, Sansores took a pitch from Evan Howse (0-1) the opposite way, and the ball fell into right field, allowing Orejudos to cross with the winning run.

The inning began as Orejudos worked a nine-pitch walk against Howse, then with Singleton at bat, Howse was called for a balk. Orejudos moved up a base, and the Spartans elected to put Singleton on with an intentional walk.

Howse committed his second balk of the inning while attempting his first pitch to Sansores, and now both Jimmie baserunners were in scoring position. After falling behind in the count 0-2, Sansores came through with his third hit and second RBI of the game.

Sansores led off the bottom of the seventh with a home run to tie the game at 5-5 after UJ had let a 4-2 lead after two innings get away.

Singleton got the Jimmies on the board in the bottom of the first with an RBI single, then Hayden Brown brought in two more runs with a two-out single to left field.

The Spartans came back with another run in the second which UJ countered in the bottom half. Singleton singled home Payton Smith with two outs to make the score 4-2.

Kendall Yackley (1-0) struck out three over the final 1 2/3 Rinnings to earn the win. Yackley, Smith, Brown, and Singleton all finished with two hits.

The comeback victory helped lessen the sting of Saturday's 11-6 loss in game one.

The Jimmies trailed 2-0 after one, but Hayden Brown hit a two-run homer with two outs in the top of the second to bring the Jimmies level.

Missouri Baptist tacked on nine straight runs over the next three innings, building an 11-2 lead going into the top of the fifth.

Payton Smith connected for UJ's second two-run home run of the game, and Jordan Singleton doubled in Chase Burke to make it 11-5. Ryan Muizelaar had a two-out double in the seventh to account for the Jimmies' final run.

Seven different UJ players had a hit, and three relievers--Anthony Comfort, Conner Fortier, and Austin Shelton--allowed just two runs (one earned) over the final four innings.

Jamestown (6-2) is back in action Sunday, taking on No. 14 Central Methodist (Mo.) University in a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m.
