Sixth-ranked Jimmies sweep No. 8 Northwestern

The sixth-ranked University of Jamestown volleyball team opened its home schedule with a sweep of No. 8 Northwestern (Iowa) College Tuesday night at Harold Newman Arena. Set scores were 25-11, 25-22, 25-22.

Jamestown (12-1, 1-0 GPAC) won for the 12th straight match and snapped the Red Raiders' (9-2, 1-1 GPAC) seven-match winning streak.

The Jimmies will host Morningside (Iowa) University Saturday at 3 p.m.

UJ opened the match by taking the first five points and eventually building a 15-4 lead. Jamestown finished the set on a 7-0 run and captured its biggest margin of victory over the Raiders.

Northwestern took a 7-3 lead in the second set, but a Kalli Hegerle (SR/West Fargo, N.D.) kill helped start a 7-0 run behind the serving of Tenley Buddenhagen (SO/Huron, S.D.). The Jimmies never trailed the rest of the way, and after the Raiders managed to draw level at 12-12, a pair of Logan Sherman (JR/Marshall, Minn.) kills along with another by Hegerle gave UJ the momentum.

Jamestown's largest lead in set three came at 12-6, but Northwestern won four straight to get back in the match. The teams traded points until the Jimmies opened up a 23-20 lead on kills by Hegerle and Aleah Zieske (SO/Spicer, Minn.).

Anna Holen (SR/LaMoure, N.D.) recorded a double-double of 10 kills and 12 digs, and Hegerle finished with eight kills and 19 assists. Ellie Holen (JR/LaMoure, N.D.) led the defense with 15 digs, while Lexi Olson (SO/Langdon, N.D.) and Darienne Johnson (JR/Eastpointe, Mich.) totaled three blocks each.
